A group of Baze University students have issued a petition to the institution's management regarding the recent increase in tuition fees for both new and returning students across all departments. The university's Deputy Registrar, Kehinde Adekeye, stated in a letter dated March 26, 2024, titled "Increase in Fees," that the university administration had decided to raise tuition fees by 35%, while hostel fees would be increased by 100%. The letter further indicated that while feeding charges are at the discretion of parents, laundry charges will be increased by 25%, and the internship fee will be raised by 35%.

The letter stated that the university's management had made the decision to implement the fee adjustments after careful consideration and assessment of various factors, including the significant increase in the cost of goods and services, provision of competitive salaries and benefits, compliance efforts with government regulations and accreditation standards, and general economic downturns.

The student leader, in a letter dated March 28, addressed to the Pro-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs, requested a downward review of the fees. The letter, titled "Petition to Review Cruel Fee Increases and Improve Student Conditions at Baze University," expressed concern and dissatisfaction with the significant increases in school fees, laundry charges, internship fees, and hostel fees. The letter stated that the unilateral decision to impose a 35% increase in school fees, 25% increase in laundry charges, and a 100% increment in hostel fees is unjustifiable and deeply burdensome to the student community. As stakeholders in their education and living conditions, the students refuse to accept such exorbitant hikes without adequate justification and consideration of their welfare. The timing of these increases exacerbates the hardship faced by students, many of whom already struggle to meet the existing financial obligations of their education. The letter also highlighted the lack of transparency and consultation in the decision-making process, which is a clear violation of the principles of fair governance and accountability. Additionally, the letter emphasized the deplorable state of amenities within the university hostel despite the exorbitant fees charged for accommodation, such as the lack of necessities like a steady water supply, clean toilets, and consistent electricity.
