A press conference held in Makurdi, the state capital, by stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Katsina-Ala local government area called for the immediate release of the detained member representing Katsina-Ala East ConstiKatsina-Alaathan Agbidyeh.
The stakeholders condemned the continued detention of the lawmaker for over seven days and described it as constitutionally wrong. They alleged that the detention of Agbidyeh was politically motivated and a frame-up orchestrated by his political enemies within and outside the APC.
The spokesperson of the stakeholders, Chief Fanen Ihyongo, also urged the general public to disregard mischievous publications by overzealous publishers against the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) George Akume regarding Agbidyeh’s detention. They described the publications as mendacious propaganda and damaging fiction.
The stakeholders expressed their sadness and anger towards the situation and emphasized that the certified true copies of the proceedings and judgment from the high court in Makurdi were proof that all charges against Agbidyeh were dropped. They also highlighted that Agbidyeh was accused of being behind the crimes in Sankera in the past and was acquitted.
The stakeholders called for Agbidyeh’s release to enable him to carry out his legislative functions. They also noted that Agbidyeh was stopped from becoming the majority leader of the House by the same group that is now trying to remove him from the State House of Assembly. The stakeholders informed the DSS, all security agencies, the press, and the general public that the continuous detention of the lawmaker was unjustified, and they demanded his immediate release.
