The Nigerian Army has scheduled the burial of soldiers killed in the Okuama community in Delta State for Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the National Cemetery in Abuja. President Bola Tinubu is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.
The soldiers, who were part of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were tragically killed by irate youths during a communal clash over a land dispute in Bomadi and Okuoma communities. Despite rumors of a reprisal attack by the military, the Defence headquarters denied the allegation and emphasized the pursuit of justice for the culprits. The Defence Headquarters also released the names of the fallen soldiers and, following orders from Tinubu and the Senate, the military arrested several individuals, including three prime suspects.
Retired army generals and civil society organizations have condemned the killings and called for swift prosecution to deter other criminal elements.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage across the country, with many calling for an end to the senseless violence that has plagued the region for far too long. The families of the fallen soldiers are mourning their loss, while the nation as a whole mourns the loss of brave men who dedicated their lives to serving and protecting their country.
As the investigation into the killings continues, there is hope that justice will be served and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions. The government has vowed to do everything in its power to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again, and to bring peace and stability to the affected communities.
In the meantime, the nation stands united in grief and solidarity with the families of the fallen soldiers. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and their memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved them. May they rest in peace, and may their legacy inspire future generations to strive for a more peaceful and just society.
