Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, has articulated the factors that contributed to the rise of Boko Haram.
He has identified inadequate instruction in Islamic studies as a significant factor influencing the insurgency within the state.
These observations were made during the inauguration of a summit dedicated to reforming the Almajiri Education System in Borno, which took place on Wednesday.
The objective of this summit is to address and enhance the traditional Islamic education practices that are prevalent in the northern states of Nigeria.
To mitigate the adverse effects associated with the Almajiri education system, the Borno State Government has established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board. This initiative aims to introduce a unified curriculum for both Sangaya and Islamic schools, thus promoting a more structured educational framework.
“The Sangaya Reform is a great development and will give Almajiri a better chance in life, particularly the introduction of integrating western education, vocational, numeracy and literacy skills into the centres, which are also described as Almajiri and Islamic schools,” Zulum said.
He added, “Distinguished guests and esteemed educationists, the government intends to streamline the informal and formal education systems to quality integrated Sangaya school for admission into colleges and universities.”
”This summit provides a platform for participants to discuss issues, share insights and propose actionable solutions to the challenges faced by the Almajiri education system."
