Hundreds of European fighters who surrendered to M23 rebels are facing deportation following their involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

On Wednesday afternoon, 29th January 2025, a contingent of 288 European mercenaries, predominantly hailing from Romania, arrived in Rwanda following their deployment with the Congolese army coalition, known as the FARDC.

This group reached the Rubavu District after their defeat and disarmament in Goma, a city located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, which was captured earlier in the week by M23 rebel forces.

The European fighters, who had been providing support to the Congolese forces, surrendered in Goma as they were outnumbered by the advancing M23 rebels. The M23 rebel has been a dominant force in eastern DRC, particularly around the city of Goma,

Following their surrender, they were transported to Rwanda, to be deported to their home countries. Rwanda, having established itself as a key player in regional security matters, is now acting as a temporary holding ground for the European fighters.
