Tax Reform Bills: Dissolved at National Assembly – Ali Ndume

Ali Ndume, the senator representing the Borno South Senatorial District, has expressed strong opposition to the tax reform bills recently submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu, characterizing them as "dead on arrival."

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Ndume urged the President to heed the recommendations of the National Economic Council and the Northern Governors’ Forum, advocating for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed legislation.

He contended that the Federal Government ought to focus on alleviating the tax burden on Nigerians rather than imposing additional financial strains. "If these bills proceed as they stand, I can assure you they will not be accepted. It is imperative to allow citizens to establish their livelihoods before implementing new tax obligations," he stated.

Ndume further elaborated that while Nigerians are generally inclined to fulfill their tax responsibilities, they must first be in a position to do so. "At present, the population is grappling with significant economic challenges. It is essential to prioritize the well-being of citizens before introducing new tax requirements," he added.

He emphasized the necessity for the Tinubu administration to undertake its reforms rather than increase the existing tax obligations borne by the populace.

The tax reform bills have faced considerable criticism, with the governors of all 36 states calling for their withdrawal. Nevertheless, President Tinubu has indicated that he will not withdraw the proposals but is open to modifications based on legislative input.
